HUNGARY 2017-2019
COCOON Following the Removals, Miskolc, Hungary, a performance-installation by Kate Browne in the Roma segregated neighborhood The Numbered Streets of Miskolc in Hungary.
"In Hungary, I had heard that the Roma were being forcibly removed from homes they had lived in for generations, many had worked in the now closed steel mills in Miskolc. When I got to the Numbered Streets in Miskolc, the neighborhood looked as if Hungary had bombed its own country. People were still being removed and homes destroyed in the name of urban renewal. I interviewed in the neighborhood and Canada, where Roma were fleeing. It’s an artwork the neighborhood could participate in, listen to, together we made a symbolic and profound experience."
