COCOON Tlatelolco, Mexico City, Mexico, a performance-installation by Kate Browne in the Tlatelolco district where the 1968 student massacre took place, on the symbolic Plaza of the Three Cultures.
"The Plaza of the Three Cultures is dense with history: it is the site of a former Aztec temple, a Catholic Church built with the stones of the temple, and a vast public housing complex, a symbol of the modern Mexican state. It is also the site of the last battle between the Aztecs and the invading Spanish in 1521, and in 1968, the site of a government massacre of students protesting for democracy. So many of the experiments I brought to fruition later with symbolic props and light, the skin of the Cocoon, the processional walk, the interviews all began while I worked on Cocoon in Tlatelolco. Mexico City was a wonderful place to work creatively at the start of this multidisciplinary series." Kate Browne
